Two Minutes With… Mark Thain

Describe your remit and responsibilities as Operations Assistant.

I’m responsible for checking hire vehicles in and out, as well as the preparation of the outgoing hire vehicles. I organise the documents for sales vehicles and handle their warranty applications. I am also the health and safety supervisor/ fire marshal for the Newmains office and have recently completed the mental health first aid course. Having just gained my Class 1 licence, I’m an occasional driver, taking vehicles to customers or workshops when needed.

What do you enjoy most about working for Asset Alliance Group?

As I have a range of responsibilities, my week can be quite varied. Some days I will be mostly in the office dealing with customers, whilst others I might be out and about in the yard or on the road helping with the movement of vehicles. Of course, special mention has to go to the constant supply of home baking brought in by Jennifer Gray in the finance team!

What’s the best thing about your team/department?

My team are always supportive, and everyone gets along well which is important in such a small office. I have colleagues who have been in the industry for many years and it’s great to be able to learn from them to develop my knowledge and skills.

Can you offer an example of the positive company culture at AAG and supportive management?

I was recently supported through my Class 1 licence by AAG, and it’s great to see other colleagues being similarly helped to develop skills and qualifications in their roles. I’ve only worked for AAG since December 2022, but I have had more opportunity for development in the past 14 months than I had in my previous job of 14 years. It’s great to work for a company that encourages you to add another string to your bow.

Who or what inspires you in your day-to-day work?

Working with my team to ensure our customers are always satisfied. It’s a great compliment to see the same, longstanding customers returning time and time again.

Describe yourself in five words?

Male. 34. Tall. Likes cats.

Who is your role model or hero outside work, and why?

My wife Maxine, we’ve been together for 15 years. She’s been through some tough times, but I admire how she keeps going, always trying to look at the positives. We always have a great time together, so even when we’ve both had a hard day, we can always cheer each other up and end the day laughing.

Describe your perfect day off, what do you like to do?

I’m really into my American sports, particularly basketball. My wife and I are season ticket holders for our local team, the Caledonia Gladiators who play in the British Basketball League. I have two cats, Pepper and Goose, and there’s nothing better than chilling on the couch with a cat on your lap, whilst watching some American football or ice hockey.
