What types of trailers are there?

Trailer and freight weight are key deciding factors when choosing the right trailer. Some of the most common types in the industry include:

  • Box van trailers

A completely rigid unit with loading doors at the back, also known as a dry freighter van or an enclosed trailer. Ideal for food, clothes and electronics which need to be weatherproofed.

  • Curtain side trailers

A rigid roof, rear doors and PVC curtain sides that can be pulled back for easy access when loading.

  • Flatbed trailers

Level flatbed trailers provide easy loading access from the sides or above – ideal for cargo that doesn’t need to be protected from the elements, like lumber or steel.

  • Low loader trailers

Low to the ground for more effortless loading of heavy goods. Ideal for carrying taller goods that might exceed legal height restrictions if carried on a flatbed.

  • Refrigerated trailers

Similar to box trailers but fully insulated, refrigerated trailers have a cooling system to keep food fresh and transport temperature-sensitive items.

How often should an HGV trailer be inspected?

It depends on the type of work you do, as well as factors like terrain, mileage and load, but generally, HGV trailers should be inspected every six weeks.
